Landmark College is committed to supporting and maintaining a campus environment that is safe and secure for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The Landmark College Students of Concern & Threat Assessment Team seeks to address student behavior of high concern of violence, potential violence, or other threat to the health and safety of any member of the Landmark College community. The Team seeks to mitigate potential risks before they result in harm.
Activities and actions of the team may include:
- Collecting information about observed behaviors regarding acts of violence, behaviors of concern, or statements and/or potential threats posed by individual(s)
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring intervention strategies and management plans that are designed to respond appropriately to the statements, behavior, and/or circumstances that generate the initial concern, threat, or perceived threat. The team may also monitor reported behaviors that are already being managed by other College systems.
- Developing and implementing reporting protocols and communications to encourage reports from the College community
- Remaining informed and trained of best practices of threat assessment and management
Goals:
- To promote the health and safety of students and all members of the community
- To provide a central clearinghouse for observations, questions, or concerns about a distressed or distressing student
- To investigate concerns and develop appropriate responses and/or interventions to support students referred to the committee
- To offer consultation & training to those members of the Landmark community who have regular contact with students so they are able to better identify behaviors which may indicate a need for a referral

Identifying Concerning Behavior
There are many behaviors that may cause concern for the safety and well-being of an individual or the campus as a whole. The following is not an exhaustive list but provides examples of concerning behaviors or situations:
- Unusual or abrupt changes in behaviors or patterns
- Extreme reaction to a loss or traumatic event
- Preoccupation with weapons, violent events, or persons who have engaged in violent acts
- Uncharacteristically poor performance
- References to harming others or planning a violent or destructive event
- Evidence of depression, hopelessness, or suicidal thoughts/plans
- Inappropriate responses such as prolonged irritability, angry outbursts, or intense reactions
- Strained interpersonal relations, isolating behaviors, or low self-esteem
- Significant change in life circumstances such as loss of job or relationship
Reporting a Threat
If you believe that an individual on campus has committed or may commit an act of violence, is engaging in behavior or making statements that raise concern about the potential for violence, or otherwise poses a threat to the health or safety of any member of the Landmark College community, make a report to the Vice President for Student Affairs, Dean of Students, or Director of Counseling Services. In the event of an imminent or unfolding emergency, dial 911 immediately.
